Watermelons Ruling???

I really had to read this poem step-by-step to undertsand it.  The opening lines however seem to suggest summertime in a violent, fantasy world, because it says that unicorns exist and that the purpose of knees is to be skinned.  The next line suggests that there’s a lot of smoking in this calm, “silent” place.  It also suggests that there is plantlife and people here.  The following paragraph mentions that during the summer of the impossible-to-exist place, which now seems more real than reality, watermelons ruled.  I found the part about watermelons ruling rather hard to undersatnd, but I’m still thinking about whether he meant that watermelons actually ruled this world or that in this world watermelons were very popular.

Fluoride: teeth cleaner or possible poison?

Fluoride. It’s something in my toothpaste, something a swish around in my mouth every time a go to the dentist, and even something that might be put into drinking water to help keep peoples’ teeth clean. Many people are opposed to this, however. Regardless of how healthy it keeps their teeth or how well it prevents cavities alot of people are against contaminating our natural drinking water supply. Fluoride could even be a toxic agent that if taken in too big amounts can pose a serious threat to people with kidney disorders and diabetes. Also, if you take too much it can raise the risk of spine deformities, joint problems, muscle wasting, genetic mutations, cancer, ect. Many politicians also oppose fluoride because they claim it to be originally be Communist idea during the Cold War. (This, however has never been confirmed) This is why many people refuse to allow fluoride to taint the drinking water supply.

I for one, am against fluoride in drinking water. I believe that I receive enough fluoride through my toothpaste and dentist appointments. I also do not want to raise the risk of any of the possible side affects I mentioned. My teeth are perfectly healthy and I have never received a cavity in my life, so I think the amount of fluoride I receive is perfect and I don’t need any more. However, I am not against fluoride in general. It prevents alot of dangers to my teeth. Fluoride should not be put into our drinking water!

In order to use fluoride back when it was discovered though, some changes to the substance had to be made. Fluoride had to be paired with other elements to form three different compounds for it to be put into toothpaste and mouthwash. These compunds were stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, and sodium monfluorophostphate. Fluroride also had to be put into liquid form to be more easily used in the drinking water supply.

Of the threats that fluoride can cause I am most worried about cancer because still no cure remains for this lethal disease and genetic mutations because raising the number of people born with disorders that can be dangerous with their bodies will become a very big problem. There is enough fluoride in the substances we use today. Whether or not people want to use it is their own personal choice. If one chooses not to clean their teeth then it is that person’s own problem.

I believe that fluoride is very useful, which is why I use it to ensure the health of my teeth, but if it contaminates our drinking water supply I could receive too much. Fluoride in drinking water should only be an option. There should be bottled water with and without fluoride. But, fluoride should not be put in everybody’s drinking water supply.
